You all probably are familiar with Vorbis (Ogg-vorbis) as an open source audio codec (an open source alternative to MP3). You also maybe aware of PNG - a famous image codec. But until now there was no video codec that was free and open. WebM is the new Media Codec that is packaged with the VP8 Video and Vorbis Auido codecs together. This is a great news for everyone involved with the web as well as those of us who are involved in the entertainment industry (I work on 3D/4D special effects cinema systems and we have an extensive film and digital media library).

Desktop Virtualization: The next big SMB move

Posted January 11, 2010 - 02:12 by kimkhan

I think, desktop virtualization technology has matured enough that it is now a great opportunity for small medium sized businesses to take advantage of great savings. I have played with the free open source VirtualBox by Sun Microsystems, showed a few colleagues of mine on how to take advantage of it - well here is a good story. A colleague of mine has an Old Palm PDA. He has been using the old software to save all his contact information. With a new desktop with a 64bit windows, he found out that his old Palm software does not run anymore. He approached me if I know of a way around.

Recenlty:

I have been trying to setup a customer support oriented website where I will have a contact form for general inquiry, a user signup page (I am using Drupal) and a help desk support application (OSTicket). Everything depends on my server being able to send out notifications anytime any of the above happens. I singed up with Rackspace and it has been an ongoing battle with them.

Opensource Cellphone Network - OpenBTS

Posted August 11, 2009 - 02:31 by kimkhan

Wondering if it would be possible to launch an opensource cellphone network service in Bangladesh. Telenor in Bangladesh is a sucker as well as all the other operators sucking big money out of the poor country. The government/political people are controlled with big bonuses from these operators. It sounds like a great solution for developing countries but red tapes in these countries are beyond imagination of the developers. Anyway it is an interesting story worth reading...

What's all these buzz about cloud computing

Posted May 26, 2009 - 04:05 by kimkhan

What's all these hype about cloud computing. Well at least I got a Pentium3 sliced into two with openvz virtualization and have their own apache and accessible by their own IP - amazing!!!. I also created my own template with webmin so both containers start with webmin. Next in my mind? limitless configuration of templates.

I just bought an HP Mini 1035, It's 10.2" is a little larger then most netbooks out there and the keyboard layout and keys are much better than the others. It came with:
Intel Atom 270
60GB SATA HDD
1GB RAM

I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, Inserted a 8GB SD Card and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix Linux on the SD Card.

I then switched my primary drive to the SD card from BIOS and configured GRUB (The linux bootloader) to allow for windows xp booting.
